Mary Hopkin . . . unchanged, untroubled-almost unconcerned with the course her life has suddenly taken, and a relative newcomer to the pop scene with Those were The Days, chatted eabsily about her looks.

"l am the first to admit that my make-up is far from stunning - I've never really bothered much with it in the past because I've always been too busy singing and playing. But that doesn't mean I'm not interested. I love to see a really well made,up face, especially when new ideas have been used. I once saw Patti Boyd wearing bright green poster paint on her eyes, and really vivid red lipstick - she looked marvellous! I love the deep reds but I can't see myself wearing them because I think everything else has to be right - you know, clothes and hair."

Her looks are very natural and girl-nextdoorish and they suit her personality. She wears make-up, but enough to complement her features rather than drown them.

"Before I think of applying any make up to my face, I cleanse with Johnson's Baby Oil. I find it suits my skin, gets all make-up off quickly and is quite good for removing stage make up, which is often plastered on quite thickly. I like then to use an all-in-one foundation by Max Factor. I've used the same one for years, only changing the shade to a slightly darker one for stage work. I know I should use shaders to slim my face a bit, but to tell the truth I wouldn't know where to start! If I had loads of spare time I'd really like to learn much more about make-up and how to apply it."

Her eyes were made up simply, slightly, but she had taken care over them.

"I like eye shadows - always used to use a brown shade, but now I use different colours.
I don't really draw in a socket line, but sometimes add a little eye liner or darker shadow there. It does somethihg... I don't know quite what! The eye liner I use is one by Miners and although it's very cheap, I find it quite good. I use mascara, but again in another cheaper make. I always use one with a spiral brush, I'm not keen on the block type.
Oh, there's one thing I would never wear, and that's false eyelashes. They look so unnatural -and anyway I couldn't be bothered with them!"

I wondered if when she went on stage, Mary's natural look was obliged to disappear beneath a plastering of heavy make-up?

"Not really. I have it done by professional make-up girls for TV and though it's much thicker than I normally wear, it's not too bad."

Mary's hair is long, straight and blonde. Does she have to spend a lot of time on it?

"well, since I've been in London I've found it more trouble. I find that curls don't hold as well here - my hair's very fine, yet quite thick. I can't manage it very well now, and I go to Leonard to have it done and conditioned. When I was at home I always used to condition it myself with Estolan."

Has she always had long hair?

"Yes, except when the Twiggy style came in and I cut it. It looked alright, but I couldn't do much else with it - not that I do now but I could if I wanted to!"

Playing the guitar so constantly must have some effect on her nails, I noticed the traditional guitarist's 'one set of long and the other short'D

"I have to take care with my nails a strengthener called Mavala - it really is marvellous!@I seldom wear nail polishCbut if I do it it's a very pale shade, or just natural."

"Just natural" is Mary Hopkin. Long may her personality | and her looks remain soD
